Hungary’s labour shortage is prompting more and more companies to employ workers from Asia – from the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia. Successful cooperation, however, does not end with arrival: the real gain depends on how quickly and smoothly the new colleagues settle into everyday work. This article gives employers practical, cultural and HR pointers.

Why is integration worth the effort?
According to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), tens of thousands of workers from third countries were already employed in Hungary in 2023, mainly in manufacturing. The experience has been decidedly positive: Asian workers are loyal and stable – at some employers staff turnover is just 0–10% a year, while the Hungarian average is several times higher. This predictability is a major competitive advantage.
What to know about cultural differences
- Communication and respect: in many Asian cultures respect for superiors is strong, and people rarely contradict openly. Silence is often politeness, not agreement – it pays to ask for feedback with direct, encouraging questions.
- Team spirit: a strong community mindset means that motivation built on team goals works particularly well.
- Meals and daily life: eating habits may differ (rice, for example, is a staple); a little attention in the staff canteen conveys tangible appreciation.
- Language: in the early period, bilingual work instructions, safety signs and mobile translation apps quickly bridge the language barrier.
Good practice for employers
- Mentor or buddy system: an empathetic, experienced colleague passes on the “unwritten rules” during the first 1–3 months – one of the most effective integration tools.
- Involving the existing team: it is worth communicating openly that the new colleagues complement Hungarian employees rather than replace them.
- Decent accommodation and reliable internet: fast, free Wi-Fi is essential for staying in touch with family and directly strengthens retention.
- Predictable administration: handling official matters smoothly gives a sense of security, which feeds back into performance.
How to build a genuinely mixed team?
The best results are achieved by companies where Hungarian and Asian colleagues truly work together – on shared shifts, in shared spaces and at shared events. Mixed teams and open communication quickly dissolve initial unfamiliarity and create a lasting, positive workplace. Early, deliberate integration benefits both sides: the new colleagues’ diligence and commitment raise the productivity of the whole team.
